WitsandPort Beaufort
Witsand/ Port Beaufort has to be one of the most beautiful, serene fishing
villages on the Southern Cape coast: a recently discovered gem situated
on the eastern bank of the mighty Breede River, where it makes its way
into the waters of San Sebastian Bay . The Bay acts as host to Southern
Right Whales and their calves from June through to November.
Statistics currently put the number of permanent residents at 260, sharing
their tranquil lifestyle and space with a variety of wildlife, where crime
is only a word.
Demand for property is however very much on the increase, particularly
from retirees, so the wheels for future development are starting to turn.
Once increased water supply issues have been addressed, as well as the
essential environmental and conservation issues, plans to develop 100
plots on the side of the river bank may be implemented.
Presently demand outstrips supply, with most existing property owners
passing down their homes from generation to generation. So future growth
is going to happen, but all involved parties will certainly ensure that
it is properly controlled and managed.
Witsand essentially consists of two distinct residential areas, namely
the river and beach communities. The four star Breede River Lodge forms
a focal point, along with two general dealers, a bottle store, a hairdresser,
a beach restaurant, two B & B's and a couple of petrol pumps.
If it is a quieter more tranquil lifestyle that you are looking for, then
take a drive out there. You will be very pleasantly surprised.
