The 'Garden Route Ale'

Paul Weavers

The Garden Route has many splendours, most of them being of the scenic variety. But where would we all be without fine draught ales and beers? As luck would have it, we are fortunate enough to have our very own brewery right here in the heart of Garden Route country.

Mitchell's Brewery in Knysna has established itself as the 'Garden Route Ale', something unique to this region which none other can boast. With their product line up ranging from Forester's Draught to Bosun's Bitter, and from Mitchell's Old 90 Shilling Ale to Raven Stout, these 4 varieties will do their work on any willing pallet.

Produced using the finest available ingredients and a carefully selected amalgam of British mashing and German lagering techniques, the ales are uniquely suited to South African conditions. The carbonation, or conditioning, is naturally achieved through lengthy secondary fermentation which produces the delicate, low carbon dioxide content, which is so much part of the character of the best traditional and Continental draught ales and beers.

So if you run a pub of any kind, or have a very thirsty workforce, or lots of friends who can help you drink fine ales on your very own stoep, then get hold quickly of Dave McKay and get your hands on a set of those splendid 'Mitchell's Hand Pumps.' If your capaciity is insufficient then either drink more beer or just keep the old account running at your local bottle store. Tours and Tastings are also not to be missed !
